In BMS as in real (but I do not have real life values) BLU107 need to be dropped at a certain speed and at a minimum alt allowing chute deployment, and rocket booster ignition ...etc... in BMS values are around:
@ 420kts : 600ft/AGL minimum
@ 480kts : 700ft/AGL minimum
@ 540kts : 800ft/AGL minimum
With a +10kts margin.
Penetration velocity is achieved by rocket-boosted kinetic energy. It is designed for level delivery at 250 feet AGL and fore release speeds up to 620 KCAS
My advises.
- Drop bombs in PAIR. with a small interval (around 50ft - 100ft max)
- Do not attack on RWY axis but under 20 to 40°.
- Better aim intersection of RWY and taxiway.
- Altitude should be enough to allow chute deployment and rocket ignition. (Around 1500ft AAL)
- Remember to set a compatible arming delay and fuze.
- Concentrate on one section per a/c.
I did the research about the real weapon and if you want to use it BMS the most realistically these are the delivery parameters:
AD 1.50 sec
200' minimum height
550 kt max speed
I've found CCIP does "center stick" for all cases except 2 bombs (where first bomb is on target and second is one spacing later). Dare I say proper Durandal use is to consider the runway width. If the runway is 150' wide and you cross at 45° angle and 150% coverage that's 318' from first to last bomb (64' average spacing). On attack target the blob centered on a taxi/runway intersection and really nail that one spot.
The way the AI employs the weapon is correct provided it's from a good angle. Come in diagonally and release at a dense spacing that ensures at least 4/6 hits. Three pairs at 75-100' is good. The one bomb per tile down the runway thing is video game nonsense.
I think the GBU-31v3 is the best. It's a large fixed objective with a lot of attackers over it at once. Laser is messy, less standoff, expensive, slow, needs LOS, and needlessly precise. Unless there is a FAC on station and some desire to be picky at the time what targets to hit then go LGB. But if you have the security to conduct that, don't blow it up and capture it intact instead. Treetop level would be Durandal and Paveway III.
Main reasons why they do not proceed this this IRL:
- Most of air defences (mostly AAA like ZU, ZPU, ZSU ...) are near runways axis. Being the first or not do not change a lot.
- In case of Xwind or not perfectly aligned attack heading (not necessarily that easy IRL ... or because of possible defensive action just before arriving ... or for any reasons you can't PERFECTLY line up early enough ...), or bore-sight issues ... or ... if you miss your pass, you have a lot of chances to miss the entire pass and all your bombs might hit off the runway (too bad for a soooo risky mission).
- Most of the time, aim is also to hit the runway access => taxiway/runaway intersections.
- Because dady said that it is bad.
